There is one statistic that lingers in the mind of an aspiring food policy advocate. The US Geological Survey reported in 2018 that agriculture accounted for a majority of water consumption in the Colorado River Basin (CRB) region, excluding water moving out of the basin and hydroelectric energy use, averaging 85% from 1985 to 2010. Why does this matter? Roughly 68% of the nation’s acres for fruits and vegetables are in California.

What do you expect to hear when walking out into a meadow? Perhaps the sound of tall grass being crushed underfoot or the chirps of crickets, the sounds of birds flying overhead, maybe even the buzz of bees gathering nectar for honey? What do you expect to see? The classic paintings and pictures of meadows include tall grass, all sorts of animals, and of course, beautiful flowers.
