    The town of Longboat Key’s fiscal year 2025 mid-year report included some positives like investment income, but staff also acknowledge more work needs to be done. Town Manager Howard Tipton and Finance Director Sue Smith presented the update on May 5 at the town’s regular meeting. “It has been a remarkable seven months in this fiscal year since the hurricanes,” Tipton said. The town’s fiscal year begins on Oct. 1 and runs through Sept. 30.

    Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium announced two new manatee patients, Cabbage and Sleet, the first patients as part of the organization’s new federal designation. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently granted Mote approval to allow the facility to become a secondary care facility for the rehabilitation of manatees. Mote President and CEO Michael Crosby said the designation is a significant step in aiding a larger issue across the state.

    Properties with trees impacted by storms can now remove them with no need to replace one tree with two new ones. The Longboat Key Town Commission voted 6-1 on May 5 to pass an amendment to the town’s tree ordinance. The objective of the change was to alleviate the pressure on certain properties by eliminating the two-for-one tree replacement requirement. Chapter 98 of the town’s code outlines the requirement for properties to plant two mature trees for every one tree removed.

    Despite the road being riddled with potholes, the town of Longboat Key is nearing preliminary construction for the Broadway Roundabout. Town staff and representatives from Kimley-Horn held a public management meeting on May 1 to allow the public to learn more about the impending Broadway Roundabout project and some changes that have happened in the past year. Town staff and Longboat Key residents, particularly north-end residents, have discussed the Broadway Roundabout for five years.
