Big Ten member Indiana has joined the list of future University of Delaware football opponents, UD announced Wednesday. Delaware will visit the Hoosiers on Sept. 14, 2030, in Bloomington. WILMINGTON -- The temperature was 45 degrees when the first pitch was thrown Tuesday night at Frawley Stadium. Maybe that’s why Mr. Celery, who dances onto the field every time the home-team Wilmington Blue Rocks score a run, appeared a little stiff when he made his second-inning debut. Mr. Celery was never seen again, however, in a 6-1 defeat that 2,120 bundled up fans came to see, some with canine companions who didn’t count in that attendance figure.

As of March 31, there were 427 student-athletes who had transferred into Delaware high schools during the 2024-25 school year. And the requests for eligibility approvals of such moves are still coming in, said Joe Papili, the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association’s compliance coordinator. An early September report indicated 114 students had switched schools under the new format as the school year commenced. That number has nearly quadrupled since, with winter and now spring sports arriving.

Fourteen years before Elena Delle Donne brought national attention to Delaware girls basketball, Monicke Foote put the First State on the map at Sanford School. Foote was national Player of the Year in 1994, a feat Delle Donne accomplished at Ursuline in 2008, before going on to excel at the University of Virginia. Foote, a 2013 Delaware Sports Hall of Fame enshrinee, will be one of 12 inducted to the Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame on April 19 at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover.
