Introduction How biodiversity will respond to rapid environmental changes is one of the central questions in ecology and conservation biology. When exposed to a new climate or environment, a species can either retain its ancestral niche (niche conservatism) and potentially undergo local extinction, shift its current distribution (niche tracking), or evolve to adapt to novel conditions by diverging away from the ancestral niche (niche divergence) (Wiens and Graham 2005).

Introduction Information about species' geographical distribution is central to many ecological and evolutionary questions and underpins effective conservation decision-making (Meyer et al. 2015, Jetz et al. 2019, Oliver et al. 2021, Jetz et al. 2022). Ideally, distributional data for a species is contiguous in space and time and covers its entire global distribution, at a scale reasonable to inform conservation action and research (Jetz et al. 2019).
