replying to: J. Geldmann et al. Nature https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-024-08512-8 (2025). In the accompanying Comment, Geldmann et al.1 incorrectly claim that protected area (PA) efficacy cannot be established without biodiversity data that predates establishment of the PA.

Introduction How biodiversity will respond to rapid environmental changes is one of the central questions in ecology and conservation biology. When exposed to a new climate or environment, a species can either retain its ancestral niche (niche conservatism) and potentially undergo local extinction, shift its current distribution (niche tracking), or evolve to adapt to novel conditions by diverging away from the ancestral niche (niche divergence) (Wiens and Graham 2005).

AbstractThreatened species are by definition species that are in need of assistance. In the absence of suitable conservation interventions, they are likely to disappear soon1. There is limited understanding of how and where conservation interventions are applied globally, or how well they work2,3.

AbstractAs climate change accelerates, species may survive in place thanks to niche plasticity or adaptation or must redistribute to conserve their environmental niches. Examples of such geographical range shifts abound, but to date an assessment of species success in retaining niches and limiting their climate change exposure is missing.

1 INTRODUCTION Understanding and addressing the global biodiversity crisis requires large volumes of ecological information compiled continuously from across the globe (Anderson, 2018; Gonzalez et al., 2023; Meyer et al., 2015). To date, the acquisition and maintenance of this information continues to meet the requirements only insufficiently for research, conservation, and policy (Jetz et al., 2019; Oliver et al., 2021).
