In December, we experienced two incidents that resulted in degraded performance across GitHub services. December 17 14:17 UTC (lasting 17 minutes)On December 17, 2024, between 14:33 UTC and 14:50 UTC, users experienced intermittent errors and timeouts when accessing github.com. The error rate was 8.5% on average and peaked at 44.3% of requests.

Near the end of Mark Zuckerberg’s almost-three-hour interview with Joe Rogan, he gave a shoutout to DeepSeek. He called its new model, which has taken the AI world by storm, both “very advanced” and as another example of why Chinese AI models cannot be trusted, because it is censored and undemocratic. If you ask DeepSeek’s model for its opinion about Xi Jinping, “it will not give you anything.” If you ask whether Tiananmen Square happened, “it will deny it.”These are Zuck’s words, not mine.

This week marks the 4th anniversary of Jack Ma’s infamous Bund Finance Summit in Shanghai that, among other things, led to the cancellation of Ant Group’s IPO. The IPO was geared up to be the largest ever – 34.5 billion USD. It was also supposed to be a rare, joint listing in both Hong Kong and Shanghai, which would’ve put the home of the Oriental Pearl on the map as a destination where premium tech companies could go public.
