On 30 June 2024, the number of student visa holders living in Australia was 608,262. This was higher than in any other year on record, surpassing the previous record of 568,753 in 2023 by approximately 7 per cent. Australia’s estimated resident population had only increased by 2 per cent over the same period from 26.65 million to 27.20 million. The number of international students studying in Australia reached a record high in 2024.

“ABS data confirms that each and every day in February, the federal government allowed an average of almost 4,000 net permanent and long-term arrivals into Australia – the highest on record. The South Australian government claimed that, when it comes to renewable energy, South Australia is ‘not just the leader of the pack—it’s in a league of its own’. Indeed the state government has argued that if South Australia were a country, then it would be comparable to Denmark in its level of variable renewable penetration. The comparison between Denmark and South Australia has also been drawn by other supporters of and participants in the renewable energy transition.
