1 INTRODUCTION Species distribution data are one of the fundamental data types included in many macroecological, biogeographical, ecological and evolutionary studies, alongside important applications such as for biological conservation and land use management. Therefore, the accuracy, precision and transparency of species distributions are paramount for robust conclusions (e.g. Ficetola et al., 2014; Rocchini et al., 2011; Rondinini et al., 2006).

The genus Monarda L. is now reckoned to contain 22 species, all natives of North America, from Vermont to northern Mexico. Linnaeus included five species in his Species Plantarum (1753), including both the large-flowered more familiar species such as M. didyma L. and M. fistulosa L. and the smaller-flowered M. punctata L., which is illustrated here (Plate 1085).

CULTIVATION The plants illustrated here are from northern Greece (Figure 1), the Nebrodi in Sicily (Figure 2), central Turkey (Figure 3) and the plant in the painting and in Figure 4 was grown from seeds collected in southern Turkey west of Antalya below Termessos. Subsp. elatius is recognised by its larger leaves and flowers, but shows primitive characters in its small, hard, papillose seeds and dehiscing pod.

Summary Corydalis mucronata Franch., illustrated here, is among several Corydalis species collected by Père Armand David in Moupine (now Baoxing) in western Sichuan. It can be a conspicuous plant, forming large populations on shady, wet slopes. Though introduced to England over 20 years ago, it is still rare in gardens. Suggestions for its successful cultivation are given. INTRODUCTION The genus Corydalis DC. is now reckoned to contain 537 species.
