On May 7 — one day after the Office of the State Inspector General announced the launch of a special review into Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center — a fight broke out among youth inside the facility, resulting in two teachers being transported to a local hospital. “Two teachers fell while trying to break up a fight among students in a classroom,” Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice spokesperson Melodie Martin said in an email to VPM News.

In an 8–1 vote, Richmond School Board members voted Tuesday night to extend Superintendent Jason Kamras’ contract with the district through the 2028–29 school year. A spokesperson for Richmond Public Schools told VPM News the agenda was amended ahead of Tuesday’s meeting to include the resolution and Kamras’ contract. Kamras has been employed by RPS as superintendent since 2018, serving through the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Hampton Roads mother says after spending months inside Virginia’s largest and only youth correctional facility, her son wants to warn other kids not to end up where he is. His shift toward advocacy, according to her, is a result of trauma — not rehabilitation. “He writes [to] me, he tells me, ‘Mom, I helped this kid. He was having a hard time. I'm talking to him through a cell, trying to calm him down,’” she said.
