It’s been a whole year since Sacramento’s independent hip-hop and R&B festival, Sol Blume, announced they’ll be postponing the festival until August 15-17, 2025, due to significant site damage and safety concerns at Discovery Park. The festival was slated to take place from May 3 to 5, 2024, and was the second consecutive year it had to be canceled due to unsafe conditions from flooding at Discovery Park.

Free concerts in the City of Trees will be returning every Friday starting May 2 at Cesar Chavez Park, the Downtown Partnership announced last week. This is the 32nd annual Concerts in the Park series that celebrates the community and downtown in the summer. The events will run from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The series will only run for nine weeks instead of 12, finishing early this year, so participants don’t have to deal with intense heat in July.

In the 1980s, concert promoter Brian McKenna entered the music scene by managing his friends' band in high school. McKenna started booking the band at different venues around Sacramento, which ultimately led him to promote shows himself at the age of 17. By 19, he was booking national, international and local acts at the Cattle Club, an old venue on Folsom Boulevard near 65th Street, along with fellow concert promoter Jerry Perry in 1989 under New View Productions.
