Clashes broke out on Monday in Syrian-Lebanese border areas between troops led by Hayat Tahrir Al Sham and fighters aligned with Hezbollah, sources on both sides said, after the killing of three Syrian soldiers, in a major escalation despite efforts by the two governments to improve relations. The Syrian Defence Ministry, led by a senior HTS commander, said overnight that Hezbollah had abducted three soldiers near the Zita dam in Homs province and “liquidated” them in Lebanese territory.

Pro-government forces have executed at least 17 Alawite civilians in coastal Syria since authorities on Monday announced the end of military operations in the region that resulted in mass killings of non-combatants, residents and activists said. The continuation of arbitrary killings indicates a lack of protection in the area, to where many of the Alawite minority in urban centres in the interior fled when it became apparent in December that former president Bashar Al Assad would fall.

Forces allied to Syria's new government on Wednesday battled with militias in the south and near the Mediterranean coast, leaving at least 20 people dead, including civilians. Sources said the fighting in the coastal city of Latakia and in the town of Sanamin in Deraa province has left at least 20 people dead since Monday.
