Hope springs eternal

There have been noticeable signs that spring has arrived on our farm. Following a snowfall during the kids’ spring break, the sun has come out and the temperatures have warmed up. It’s a different feel of seasons. The flowers have begun appearing in my yard and on my fruit trees. The bees have been out scouting and gathering water. The wheat in the fields has begun to turn a vibrant green. Migratory birds are moving north. The daylight is present longer.

I drove my kids to school one morning last week. As we drove to town, we passed a farm pond that had the remains of a homemade hockey rink pulled onto the wheat surrounding the pond. This particular pond has had many days this winter where the ice has been so thick that hockey games and ice skating has been a common sight for passersby. Now, the ice on the pond has melted and replaced by an impressive number of geese floating on the water.

My sister called me out of the blue last week. As her name and face appeared on my cell phone screen, I immediately wondered what was wrong. She’s a busy mom shuttling three boys around to practices after school on most weeknights. I was making sure my kids had their homework done, the TV had been turned off and I was getting everyone ready for bed. My sister and I don’t normally call one another unless it’s the weekend. If it’s a weekday conversation, it’s mostly through text. I answered.

My father-in-law called me on a recent Friday night to let me know the first three lambs of the season had arrived. The triplets were born in the pasture and would need to be brought up to the barn and kept in the nursery pens to make sure all three lambs would be claimed by the mother and that they’d all get plenty of milk in their first few days. When I got the call, my family was in the process of getting ready to make a trip to town to go out to dinner and then catch a movie together.

If you’re anything like me, you walk into a bookstore and your mind goes blank. What do I like to read? Where do I start? Have I heard about any of these books? Parnassus Books has found a way to help people like me, and that’s through a video series called “The Laydown Diaries,” hosted by award-winning author and Parnassus owner Ann Patchett — along with her dog Nemo VanDevender. When Nashville went into lockdown for COVID-19, bookstore traffic came to a halt.

Even the best of us get certain words confused. For me, it’s exasperate and exacerbate. Whichever of those words I’m supposed to use, I’m using the other one. Maybe for you it’s bear vs. bare, or canvas vs. canvass. It’s rough out in these grammar streets. Luckily, Nashville has someone with the smarts and the sense of humor to help.
