Back when Tony Lee was filling prescriptions as a retail pharmacist, he began dreaming about how to make his job better. “I saw a lot of pharmacists who were just burnt out and not very happy with their jobs,” said Lee, MBA 25. Many were frustrated by long retail hours and felt stuck behind the counter, rushing to fill prescriptions instead of doing the clinical work they were trained to do.

For Krissy Estrada, a trip to Mexico last June was both a new experience and a homecoming. As a Mexican American, Estrada had traveled to the country many times before, but never to Mexico City and never as a business student. “From a business perspective, when you take yourself out of your comfort zone, you just get a different viewpoint on whatever problem you’re trying to solve, and you just never know what that can unlock,” she said.

For Vaneshia Reed, MBA 26, the road from the culinary world to business school aligned with her mission to help improve the operational inefficiencies of food systems. “Working in the industry and realizing how broken our food system was, and also thinking about who has access to capital, got me excited about private market investing and being able to democratize access to capital,” Reed, one of 12 Berkeley Haas Finance Fellows, said.

UC Berkeley has received a $15 million grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) that will fund a new ‘Innovation Hub’ and help bridge the gap between academia and entrepreneurship. Under the grant, Berkeley will lead a new NSF Northwest Region Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Hub with UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Francisco, UC Santa Cruz, Oregon State University, University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the University of Washington.

After Fadell left Apple in 2010, he founded Nest Labs, known for its smart-home products, including the energy saving Nest Learning Thermostat.

Berkeley Haas Product Management Club members at the club’s recent retreat. Berkeley Haas has a thriving community that cares deeply about product management. Among that group is Ansu George, EWMBA 25, who aims to make that group even stronger in her role as president of the new student-run Product Management Club (PMC). With a collaborative team of 13 MBA students, George is now gearing up to host the inaugural Haas Product Con on Oct. 26 at Chou Hall’s Spieker Forum.
