New on-pack warning labels are needed on tobacco packaging to motivate and support smoking cessation, a study from University of Otago researchers has found. The researchers asked 27 people who used roll-your-own tobacco and came from Dunedin and Wellington how they responded to the large graphic warnings on tobacco packs. Their findings are published in the international journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research.

Samoan academic Professor Jemaima Tiatia-Siau has praised Pacific and Māori students for unifying to defend their spaces at the University of Auckland have been praised for their solidarity. New Zealand's world-ranked university was criticised in March about a controversial sign outside a study area on campus saying: “This is a designated area for Māori and Pasifika students. Thank you”.
