An award-winning Gisborne business that supplied thousands of lunches daily to local schools is closing its doors after the Government’s new school lunches programme more than halved its contract. The founders of Puku Ora say changes with the national school lunch funding model meant they lost a core part of their business, making it difficult to continue operating.

Gisborne audiences will soon have the chance to see global roots reggae phenomenon Katchafire when they headline at the fourth annual Summer Frequencies music festival on Saturday, January 18. Hailing from Kirikiriroa/Hamilton, Katchafire is an all-Māori band made up of Grenville Bell on lead guitar, son Logan Bell on guitar and vocals, Jordan Bell on the drums and Leonard “Leon” Davey on percussion and vocals.

Gisborne man Falcon James (Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki) has realised a long-held dream to complete a novel and publish it. He has self-published Haka! The Backlash! on Amazon Kindle in a series format. Described as an epic tale weaving together fantasy, horror and romance, it is set in Gisborne in 1869 and 1985 and examines the impact of English colonisation on Māori despite the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

A basketball tournament honoured Midge Te Kani and raised funds for her whānau. The event featured ten teams, raising over $3000, with additional donations exceeding $22,000. Rewi Nankivell, injured in the crash, remains in hospital; the community support continues. A basketball tournament in honour of the late Midge Te Kani took place last Sunday to bring the Tairāwhiti community together and raise money for her whānau. Jacqueline Nankivell, 17, and her brother Rewi jnr, 15, were injured in a crash in September that tragically took their mother’s life.
