Photo / Emma PollittThe region’s red cattle studs have continued their total clearance record for the rising two-year-old bull sales season in Tairāwhiti. Mokairau Herefords at Whāngārā and Wilencote Polled Herefords at Ngatapa sold out at their on-farm sales on Wednesday. A total of 53 young bulls went to new homes.

A champion for wellbeing and safety in the communities of Tairāwhiti for more than 30 years has been recognised in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours. Co-founder and kaihautu (co-ordinator) of Tauawhi Men’s Centre Tim Marshall has received a King’s Service Medal for services to the community and waka ama. “I am very humbled to receive this award and was initially reluctant to accept, but I have done so out of respect for those who nominated me,” Marshall said.

Poverty Bay sheep dog trial centre club members Andrew Savage, Samantha Shaw and Jo McIntyre at the Tux South Island and New Zealand championships, where Shaw won a national title and McIntyre a South Island crown. Matawai dog triallists Samantha Shaw and Jo McIntyre flew the Poverty Bay centre flag high with title-winning performances in the South Island this week. The South Island and national championships were held at Lochiel Station near Hanmer Springs.

Columbine Industries will shut up shop in about two months, ending nearly 75 years of manufacturing for the family-owned hosiery business. Photo / Murray RobertsonThe closure of one of Gisborne’s oldest family-owned businesses in just over two months will mean the loss of 45 jobs. Hosiery manufacturer Columbine has operated for nearly 75 years on premises at the end of Disraeli St, next to Gisborne Intermediate School. Managing director Michael Thorpe expressed his deep sadness over the decision.

Poverty Bay centre dog triallists have been featuring on the various leaderboards at the South Island and New Zealand championships being held at Lochiel Station near Hanmer Springs. The championships started on Sunday.
