Platforming games have been around nearly as long as video games themselves. One of the most popular genres, there have been hundreds – if not thousands – of excellent platformer games in the last 30 years. The genre’s popularity may have been driven by Mario and Sonic, but they’re far from the only platforming heroes out there. Over time, plenty of other platform games have carved their own path. But what are the best platforming games on PS5? Well, they come in all shapes and sizes.

I was excited to get my hands on Sunset Motel. You might already know that I love a good renovation simulator game, and I’ve sunk a lot of hours into House Flipper and Hotel Renovator, amongst others. Seeing Sunset Motel launch on the Steam store, then, I obviously had to give it a try. This simulation promises that you’ll not only renovate a run-down motel, but you’ll also be in charge of every aspect of keeping your guests happy, too. At first, Sunset Motel keeps things pretty simple.

It’s no secret that I absolutely loved Neon Abyss when it released back in 2020. I may have audibly whooped with joy when it was announced that a sequel was in development, too. And after getting some hands-on time with Neon Abyss 2 last month, I was left very much looking forward to more. I won’t have to wait too long as developer Veewo Games has just announced a release date: Neon Abyss 2 will be entering early access on 17th July.

Have you ever played Islanders? If so, you need to jump on Tranquil Isle immediately. This cosy, zen-like title has you building your own island town without threat of invasion, natural disasters or any of that other fuss that typically goes along with city builders. You’ll simply be placing homes, farms, bakeries and libraries until you simply can’t. It’s utterly relaxing, and an absolute joy to play. I mention Islanders because Tranquil Isle plays out in much the same way.

I knew that Witch Beam’s next project would unlikely live up to the highs of Unpacking, one of my all-time favourite games. I’ve lost hope of an Unpacking 2 happening any time soon (if ever), and the studio’s latest game, Tempopo, couldn’t be more different from the wonderful narrative-driven house-moving simulator. Instead, Tempopo is a colourful rhythmic puzzle game — one that I think has a bit of an identity crisis.
