When Chuck Crispin designed and installed the beautiful parquet wood flooring in the Swope Art Museum in his hometown of Terre Haute, Ind., in 1998, he didn’t anticipate the flooring wouldn’t be recoated for more than 20 years, but that’s how it turned out, and when he returned to care for the floors, “a lot of dirt was walked into the grain,” he says.

This issue’s Trick of the Trade is from Daniel Caffo of Daniel Caffo Hardwood Flooring Inc. in Woodlyn, Pa.:I came up with this jig for scribing to the stone walls of a recent project we did in Wayne, Pa. I used an oak cut-off for the base, and the bottom edges were rounded over to avoid catching on small obstructions. I also opened the groove slightly so it would glide easily along the board being scribed.

Jack Horton and his brother have restored classic cars since they were teenagers, and their grandfather did, too. In particular, Jack always loved his grandfather’s 1953 Chevy pickup, and “I made sure he knew I was very interested in it,” he says. Then tragedy struck in January: Jack and his wife, Jessica, lost their third son, Caster, only five days after he was born. Afterwards, Jack’s grandfather called and said he wanted to give Jack the truck in memory of Caster.
