    The upcoming provincial election comes at a crucial time for Ontarians, as food insecurity continues to reach record levels across the province. In our 41 years at The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, we’ve never seen a higher demand for emergency food assistance. One in eight households in Waterloo Region rely on food support — a staggering 150 per cent increase from just three years ago, when it was one in 20.

Imagine an Ontario farmer named Joe. After a successful harvest, Joe ends up with more fresh produce than he can sell. Wanting to make a difference, he decides to donate the extra food to his local food bank.

    In The Food Bank of Waterloo Region’s 2024 Community Impact report, we shared that the need for food assistance has once again hit record levels, with one in eight households — or 73,600 people — in Waterloo Region accessing support this past year. This is a big increase from last year, when one in 10 households, or 58,600 people, needed help.
