March is Nutrition Month — a nationwide campaign highlighting the importance of making nutritious food choices and developing healthy eating habits. But for individuals and families facing food insecurity, accessing fresh, healthy food isn’t always easy. In Waterloo Region, nearly 74,000 people, including 25,000 children, live in food-insecure households, making it difficult to maintain a balanced diet.

The upcoming provincial election comes at a crucial time for Ontarians, as food insecurity continues to reach record levels across the province. In our 41 years at The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, we’ve never seen a higher demand for emergency food assistance. One in eight households in Waterloo Region rely on food support — a staggering 150 per cent increase from just three years ago, when it was one in 20.

Collaboration is key to building a stronger, hunger-free community. Sometimes that collaboration happens right here at the local level, and other times, it goes beyond. Let me explain. Imagine an Ontario farmer named Joe. After a successful harvest, Joe ends up with more fresh produce than he can sell. Wanting to make a difference, he decides to donate the extra food to his local food bank.
