A few days ago, we held our first in-person rural Solutions Circle in Lexington, Miss., located about an hour from Jackson. Calling it “fantastic” would be an understatement. For those unfamiliar, our Solutions Circles are community-led discussions where anyone can participate, provided they agree to our ground rules, most of which involve respectful dialogue. Attendees write down three or four challenges on sticky notes as they enter, which our team quickly organizes into topic areas.

Next week is the Mississippi Free Press’ fifth birthday and Sunshine Week, an annual initiative focusing on the importance of government transparency. It’s apropos that it falls the same week and follows the decision from the Hinds County Chancery Court that ruled the Mississippi Legislature wasn’t a public body.

Right now, I’m at a small journalism conference where they’ve convened local newsrooms, funders, news influencers and media strategists. I’ve had no fewer than five women stop me and ask if I’m OK, and I’ve done the same in turn. We’ve heard that one of our friends had a team member swatted because of their work with immigrant communities. On the other hand, it’s been terrific to catch up with colleagues and to learn about grandkids, engagements and new houses.

My favorite poet, Nikki Giovanni, died this week. She was 81 and battled cancer on and off for for years. As a student at Mississippi University for Women, I helped host her, picking her up from the airport and introducing her for our Black history program. She was incredibly kind. I was astonished that she talked to me like a peer. She worked hard not to cuss during her appearance, which disappointed me as a certified cusser, but one understands contractual obligations.

I’ll be honest: It’s been a rough few weeks. Let’s face it. It’s been a bumpy ride for most of us since 2020. What’s the saying? I’m tired of living in unprecedented times. I’m generally an optimist, more of a pragmatic optimist but an optimist all the same. That’s been tough this season.

Black women are turning inward. We are not organizing attending or serving. There’s also an active rebellion against the word BIPOC. I’m about to call a man who is kind and decent to tell him to take me off an important project because I’m exhausted.

Maybe now y’all will understand why Black people wanted to keep the old white guy in play because we know y’all better than you know yourselves.
