    You might know that I went to seminary, which might seem like an unusual choice for someone who majored in journalism and eventually circled back to what’s likely to be my last career choice. A number of my journalism friends have either attended a seminary or are considering doing so. We talked about that a lot this week at the Institute for Nonprofit News’ annual conference in Minneapolis. It’s an interesting thing to consider, especially as extremists hijack faiths of all stripes.

    Jimmie Christian Duncan learned in April 2025 that a Louisiana judge had dismissed his capital murder conviction and he would no longer face the prospect of execution. In 1998, a jury convicted Duncan of murdering his girlfriend’s 23-month-old daughter, and he had been on death row ever since. Louisiana has a long and troubled death penalty history. From 1976 to 2015, 80% of the state’s capital sentences were reversed on appeal, and 12 people have been exonerated from its death row.

    As World War II raged across Europe in 1941, Centreville Mayor Lee B. Robinson knew the United States had a pressing need to train up as many fighting men as possible and saw his town in southwestern Mississippi as an ideal location for a U.S. Army training camp. In February that year Robinson gathered together a delegation to go before the Board of Army officers at Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg, Miss., and promote Centreville for a camp.
