Each spring the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington hosts top eventers from around the world in what is billed as “The Best Weekend All Year”: the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event. It was a historic weekend, with German juggernaut Michael Jung winning the five-star for the fifth time, a feat no other rider has accomplished. And in the Cosequin Lexington CCI4*-S, Will Coleman won for the second year in a row, this time with his longtime partner Off The Record.

Lexington, Ky.—April 25The last time veterinarian Chris Newton rode in the Kentucky Three-Day Event, things looked a bit different. The year was 1994, four years before the event was upgraded to a five-star. It was still the long-format era, and Newton, who’s based in Lexington, estimates that approximately 90% of the riders were mounted on Thoroughbreds. “The fences were probably much bigger, much more galloping, and far less technical at that stage,” he said.

German Olympian and dressage leader Michael Jung proved once again just how good he is, adding just 2.4 time penalties with FischerChipmunk FRH to sit on a score of 21.

Lexington, Ky.—April 25The Cosequin Lexington CCI4*-S dressage concluded this morning with Will Coleman and Off The Record with a new record score for the competition, 21.8. Last year the 16-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Arkansas—Drumagoland Bay, ARD Ohio) finished third, adding just 0.8 cross-country time penalties to his dressage score. Phillip Dutton, who was the overnight leader from Thursday, moved into second with his second ride, Possante, with a score of 23.1, a personal best for the pair.

Their score of 25.6 puts them comfortably in front of the current second-place pair Molly Duda and Disco Traveler (27.7) and third-placed Caroline Pamukcu and HSH Blake (27.9). “It’s great to be here.
