Wantagh’s baseball team is off to a strong start to the season. The Warriors are 12-1 overall and locked in a tie for first place in Nassau Conference A-1 with Clarke. And yet, like Mudville, there’s no joy in Wantagh. “We’re staying on top of them because our goals are always big, so I guess we don’t tend to enjoy the wins as they come because we’re always trying to improve for when it matters,” Wantagh coach Keith Sachs said.

After a 9-2 start in Nassau Conference I, the Sailors sit in first place and look every bit like a county champion not ready to relinquish their title. That also won’t be easy. Conference I features the six best softball teams in the county. Rivals Massapequa and Farmingdale are just behind first-place Oceanside, and Syosset has won five games in a row.

The season started on March 27 against Oceanside. But for the Massapequa softball team, the seeds were sown at the most magical place on Earth shortly after that 3-1 loss. It was a trip to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World where the team’s camaraderie took shape. From a dinner at Planet Hollywood to touring Epcot and Magic Kingdom and a scavenger hunt at the team hotel, a bond was formed.
