To help the Wantagh boys’ lacrosse team win a second consecutive county title, the Martini brothers turned Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium into their backyard. Dylan Martini fed brother Luke Martini, and the freshman rounded the cage and scored the overtime winner to lift second-seeded Wantagh over top-seeded South Side, 11-10, in the Nassau Class C final Saturday. “Me dodging from the top alley, initiating, trying to draw his guy to me. He was supposed to go to the left,” Dylan Martini said.

The Vikings had rallied to score four unanswered goals to tie the score entering the fourth quarter. It was time for Captain Clutch. Paige Garguilo scored twice in the fourth quarter and came up with a critical interception to help top-seeded Massapequa defeat No. 2 Port Washington, 11-9, and capture a fifth straight county title May 27 at Adelphi University. “She’s a two-year captain. The flame was ignited for Michael Jannotte two years ago following a loss to Port Washington in the Nassau Class A boys’ lacrosse semifinals. It was a slow burn for the Massapequa goalie. A year after narrowly missing out on the playoffs, the Bellmore/Merrick girls’ flag football team set out to return to the postseason and perhaps make a miraculous run to a Long Island crown like it did four years ago, when the sport was in its infancy. It was an uneven season — early struggles followed by a late-season surge — as Bellmore/Merrick accomplished the goal of a playoff berth.

The Oceanside girls lacrosse team ended the regular season winning four of its final five games, including a 13-6 victory over MacArthur on May 8. The Sailors head into the Nassau Class A playoffs as the No. 5 seed and will head to fourth-seeded Farmingdale in the quarterfinals May 15. It’s a rematch of last year’s quarterfinals, won by the Dalers by one goal. Farmingdale, perhaps, can provide the blueprint for Oceanside’s playoff run.
