Read the small printAll travel insurance policies come with a Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) which you should read in detail but probably won’t because they are tedious and bewildering. A focused skim read can be very beneficial. Look out for the “policy cover section” which lists what is covered and what’s not covered and don’t miss the “general exclusions” section. If you have any medical issues pay attention to the pre-existing conditions section.

I nearly killed our firstborn when he was 11 and I was teaching him to surf. I’d been pushing him into waves all morning at our local beach when a steep one reared and I slung him down its quickening slope with an encouraging hoot. I’ll spare you the details but there was a fin slice, an exposed intestine, and a lot of blood. My wife held our boy’s pale hand on the helicopter dash to John Hunter Hospital where skilful surgeons stitched him back together again.

In the bleakest of places, the human spirit soared. There isn't much to see in the Robben Island cell, which confined Nelson Mandela for 18 years of his 27-year incarceration. The duo chrome box measures just eight by seven feet. Its cement walls are painted muted shades of off-white and asylum green. There is no bed – just two slim mats and three blankets, neatly folded on the cold, hard floor. A plate, a bowl, and cutlery sit on a tiny brown desk.

Drive north from Cape Town and Africa soon becomes arid and flat. After a few hours of dusty farmland, you wind up into the sandstone Cederberg Mountains. Here the ochre colours and stunted hills resemble Australia’s Kimberley complete with stands of (introduced) gum trees. It feels like an ancient place, a land that holds ancient stories. And it is just that. The Cederbergs are one of the best places to see cave art from Africa’s earliest inhabitants, the San (or Bushmen).
