The family of a Grade 12 learner at Kgabo Secondary School in Mokgokong village, outside Polokwane in Limpopo, who committed suicide in October last year, is outraged and frustrated by the Education Department’s continued silence on the matter. Joseph Maimela committed suicide amid allegations that bullying by some teachers may have contributed to his decision to take his own life.

The passengers of a bus which collided with two vehicles on the N1 near Mookgophong in Limpopo today say they are still traumatised. Two people died and one injured person was rushed to hospital. The bus was travelling from Harare, Zimbabwe to Durban. Traffic authorities say a sedan lost control and collided with an on-coming bus which also lost control and hit another vehicle. A driver of the sedan and a passenger succumbed to their injuries on the scene.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Thembi Hadebe says more gender-based violence ( GBV) survivors have started to report cases to police. She was speaking during the provincial launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign in Moletjie outside Polokwane. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of gender-based violence and promote efforts to prevent it. Hadebe says there are strong indications that more people are reporting cases.

Limpopo Police have arrested 11 suspects in Praktiseer, outside Burgersfort for alleged extortion at a local mine. Police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says that the local business forum allegedly threatened to close and disrupt mining activities if the mine doesn’t give them tenders and meet their other demands. Colonel Ledwaba says the suspects were arrested when they were trying to blockade the mine entrance.

Scores of residents have visited Eskom to recode their electricity meter boxes ahead of the November 24 deadline. After the above mentioned date, all Standard Transfer Specification compliant meters will stop accepting credit tokens.
