The passengers of a bus which collided with two vehicles on the N1 near Mookgophong in Limpopo today say they are still traumatised. Two people died and one injured person was rushed to hospital. The bus was travelling from Harare, Zimbabwe to Durban. Traffic authorities say a sedan lost control and collided with an on-coming bus which also lost control and hit another vehicle. A driver of the sedan and a passenger succumbed to their injuries on the scene.

Thirteen people have been killed in two separate crashes in the Free State in the last 24 hours. In the first one, 10 people were killed on the N1 south of Kippies towards Kroonstad when a minibus crashed into a truck in the early hours of this morning. One person from the minibus and the truck driver survived. The affected stretch of the road is currently closed as emergency personnel extract bodies from the wreckage.

Officials from the Department of Correctional Services have conducted a surprise search at Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein. This is the facility where convicted rapist and murderer Thabo escaped from in 2022. The raid was led by National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services Makgothi Thobakgale. The operation is to rid the facility of contraband.

The police diving unit has retrieved the body of a 14-year-old boy who drowned in a sewage pan at Virginia in the Free State. Police Spokesperson Stephen Thakeng confirmed that the body has been retrieved. The boy, identified as Pule Semenya, is said to have drowned on Saturday while in the company of his friends. The teenager reportedly went swimming in the pan with friends when the incident occurred.

A 42-year-old man has been arrested during an anti-illegal mining operation in the Phomolong informal settlement near Welkom in the Free State. Police say they recovered suspected gold bearing material weighing 15 kilograms, gold processing equipment and mercury. The suspect is expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon. In a separate incident, four suspects have been arrested in Vierfontein for attempting to smuggle food intended for illegal miners at Kopanong mine.
