The passengers of a bus which collided with two vehicles on the N1 near Mookgophong in Limpopo today say they are still traumatised. Two people died and one injured person was rushed to hospital. The bus was travelling from Harare, Zimbabwe to Durban. Traffic authorities say a sedan lost control and collided with an on-coming bus which also lost control and hit another vehicle. A driver of the sedan and a passenger succumbed to their injuries on the scene.

Thirteen people have been killed in two separate crashes in the Free State in the last 24 hours. In the first one, 10 people were killed on the N1 south of Kippies towards Kroonstad when a minibus crashed into a truck in the early hours of this morning. One person from the minibus and the truck driver survived. The affected stretch of the road is currently closed as emergency personnel extract bodies from the wreckage.

Officials from the Department of Correctional Services have conducted a surprise search at Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein. This is the facility where convicted rapist and murderer Thabo escaped from in 2022. The raid was led by National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services Makgothi Thobakgale. The operation is to rid the facility of contraband.

The police diving unit has retrieved the body of a 14-year-old boy who drowned in a sewage pan at Virginia in the Free State. Police Spokesperson Stephen Thakeng confirmed that the body has been retrieved. The boy, identified as Pule Semenya, is said to have drowned on Saturday while in the company of his friends. The teenager reportedly went swimming in the pan with friends when the incident occurred.

A 42-year-old man has been arrested during an anti-illegal mining operation in the Phomolong informal settlement near Welkom in the Free State. Police say they recovered suspected gold bearing material weighing 15 kilograms, gold processing equipment and mercury. The suspect is expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon. In a separate incident, four suspects have been arrested in Vierfontein for attempting to smuggle food intended for illegal miners at Kopanong mine.

Police at Phuthaditjhaba in Qwaqwa in the Free State have made an urgent call on the community to assist in tracing two armed suspects. This after a 61-year-old woman and her 40-year-old son were shot and killed in their home on Friday. The suspects fled the scene on foot. Police Spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring says a mother and her two sons were inside their four-bedroom house when they heard a knock on the door. Mophiring says two unknown men walked into the house, asking for the woman’s elder son.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is probing a death in police custody. This after a 43-year-old man shot and killed himself in a police charge office at Ventersburg police station on Monday. The man was arrested at a tavern in Winburg over the weekend after his wife reported a case of kidnapping and rape against him. She told police that on Saturday evening, the deceased forced her out of her house into a vehicle at gunpoint, leaving her six-year-old daughter alone.

The Free State office of the Public Protector has confirmed that it will assess corruption complaints against Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae and her husband who is the Mangaung Metro Speaker, Laurence Mathae. In a letter addressed to ActionSA provincial leader Patricia Kopane, the office has acknowledged receipt of the complaints. The office will also conduct a preliminary assessment to determine whether or not the allegations fall within its jurisdiction.

Twenty-nine people have been arrested in Mangaung in Bloemfontein in the Free State for public violence following the looting of foreign-owned tuck shops overnight. Residents went on a rampage yesterday after 47 learners from Ihobe Primary School were rushed to Pelonomi Hospital for consuming suspected expired biscuits and chocolates. A child from Toka Primary School was also rushed to hospital due to suspected food poisoning. So far, all children except one have been discharged from hospital.

The Free State Health Department has dispatched Environmental Health Practitioners to Welkom, to investigate an incident where 38 children from Daluvuyo Primary School fell ill. Thirty-seven learners were rushed to Bongani hospital earlier today after eating snacks and sweets.
