The Supreme Court on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) directed the State of Uttar Pradesh to pay ₹5 lakh in interim compensation to a man who remained in jail for 28 days despite the Court’s order granting him bail in an abduction and unlawful religious conversion case. The man, identified as Aftab, was granted bail by the apex court, followed by a release order by the trial court.

A petition filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) alleged “systemic failures” in maintenance, functionality and passenger services on Air India flights while highlighting the tragic Ahmedabad crash. The plea filed by advocate Ajay Bansal wanted the court to order the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to conduct surprise audits of the entire fleet of Air India and other airlines operating in India, and make public its findings, corrective measures and penalties imposed.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) stayed the deportation of a woman as a “foreigner” who claimed that generations of her family have lived in Assam and have documents to prove their Indian nationality. A Bench of Justices K.V. Viswanathan and N. Kotiswar Singh ordered the Union government to not take any coercive steps against Jaynab Bibi, represented by advocates Fuzail Ahmad Ayyubi and Akansha Rai.

NEW DELHI The Supreme Court on Friday sought the State of Karnataka to respond to a petition seeking to ensure the safe and unimpeded screening of Kamal Haasan’s Tamil movie Thug Life in the State. A Vacation Bench headed by Justice PK Mishra was also asked by petitioner, M. Mahesh Reddy, represented by advocate Athenam Velan, to take action against elements who have issued threats and incited violence against theatres and the makers of the film.

The Tamil Nadu government, in a late night move, approached the Supreme Court on Tuesday against a Madras High Court stay of nine Acts related to the appointments of Vice-Chancellors in State-run universities. The High Court had ordered a stay despite the Supreme Court, in an April 8, 2025 judgment, having invoked its inherent powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to deem that the Bills were assented to by the State Governor R.N. Ravi.
