1 INTRODUCTION Short-term complications associated with exploratory laparotomy in the horse include colic, incisional complications, postoperative ileus, endotoxaemia, thrombophlebitis, septic peritonitis, diarrhoea and colitis.1 Colitis may result from non-infectious (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, sand enteropathy) and infectious (e.g., Salmonellosis) etiologies. Diagnosis of infectious colitis has been shown to impact morbidity and mortality in hospitalised horses.
