Although existing data have demonstrated the effectiveness of dual-modality intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) in reducing adverse neurologic outcomes after aortic arch surgery and carotid endarterectomy, IONM during routine adult cardiac surgery has not yet been adopted as the clinical standard of care, despite suggestions by the American Heart Association.

1 INTRODUCTION Short-term complications associated with exploratory laparotomy in the horse include colic, incisional complications, postoperative ileus, endotoxaemia, thrombophlebitis, septic peritonitis, diarrhoea and colitis.1 Colitis may result from non-infectious (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, sand enteropathy) and infectious (e.g., Salmonellosis) etiologies. Diagnosis of infectious colitis has been shown to impact morbidity and mortality in hospitalised horses.
