“I paint people at work,” says Karen Bailey. That’s how she came to be rolling sandwiches in a church kitchen in Ottawa one day, alongside the 70- and 80-year-old women whose portraits she was painting. That’s also how, the next day, she was flying to Afghanistan, entering the Kandahar Air Field in a sandstorm to document Canadian military medical personnel at work. For over four decades, Karen Bailey has painted Canadians who serve.

A lot has changed in the past five years at Trinity Western University (TWU) in Langley, B.C., Canada’s biggest Christian liberal arts school. On March 10, after covid-related delays, TWU faculty finally received confirmation from the B.C. Labour Board that their unionization vote from October 2021 had been successful.
