So begins Netflix’s Ripley, an eight-part series adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 book The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Earlier this year, the United Nations issued a warning that humanity has two years left to take urgent action on addressing climate change. The historic heat waves, ravaging wildfires and surprise floods of Summer 2024 underscored this warning. The Insurance Bureau of Canada reports that Summer 2024 was the costliest on record, with seven billion dollars in insured losses due to severe weather including the wildfires in Jasper, hailstorms in Calgary and flooding in Ontario and Quebec.

Aging – is it a blessing or a burden? A long life is considered a gift; the longer one lives, the more they experience. And yet, paradoxically, society poses it as a problem to fix. Get older, pop culture says, but don’t let the years show on your face. Grow, but don’t allow the hardships of health to display on your physique. Lord willing, we all reach old age. But in a youth-oriented capitalist society, the older generation can feel neglected and pushed to the sidelines as they exit the workforce.
