    Fireworks displays and celebrations are planned throughout the area for the Fourth of July holiday. Events include fireworks shows, live music, food vendors and family-friendly activities. Locations for the festivities include Hopewell, Busch Gardens, Petersburg, Fort Lee, Colonial Heights, Chesterfield, Richmond, Kings Dominion, Colonial Williamsburg and Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. Most events are scheduled for July 4, but some begin as early as June 28 and extend to July 7.

    The highest risk of severe thunderstorms is predicted for June 19, affecting a wide area from New Jersey to North Carolina. The National Weather Service (NWS) out of Wakefield, Virginia issued a hazardous weather outlook at 6:56 a.m. on June 16 for Petersburg and surrounding areas. The weather on Juneteenth, the federal holiday on June 19, is not looking great.

    Eight Dinwiddie Middle School FBLA members qualified for the national competitions. The students placed in the top five at the state-level competitions in March. The national competitions will be held in Anaheim, California from June 29 to July 2. Eight members of the Dinwiddie Middle School Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America [FBLA] are gearing up to compete on the national level at the end of June.

    Two Petersburg High School students qualified for the 2025 National Speech and Debate Tournament. Their coach, Terri Smith, has led the team since 2012 and emphasized the positive impact of speech participation on students. The national tournament will take place in Des Moines, Iowa from June 15-20. Petersburg High School speech students will compete in the 2025 National Speech and Debate Tournament in Iowa.

    Virginia State University students won top prizes at Future Business Leaders of America, Inc.’s National Leadership Conference. The event May 31-June 2 in Dallas drew over 1,000 college students, educators and volunteers. At the NLC, the VSU Chapter of FBLA showcased exceptional talent. The chapter, according to a news release, was consistently visible on the leaderboard and maintained a high level of networking and participation throughout the conference.
