The livelihood of the world's 150 million rice farmers comes with a cruel paradox. Many are among the poorest in the world, living in regions hardest hit by climate change, yet they depend on a crop which is worsening its effects. Rice, a staple crop feeding 4 billion people daily, contributes to 10 per cent of global human-made methane emissions.

As dusk breaks on Kangaroo Island, Paul Jennings unleashes the latest weapon in the war against feral cats. It is a battle as old as time, but this time, the dogs have technology on their side. Bluetick coonhounds, which are bred in the United States for their tracking skills, are being trained to help eliminate the invasive predators. Three decades ago Saramat "Tou" Ruchkaew swapped her corporate heels in Bangkok for boots and went on to become one the Northern Territory's biggest mango growers. She helps pick and pack the mangoes from her orchard of 70,000 trees ahead of the wet season, and oversees the truckies who collect the fruit for distribution. Tou has never been afraid of hard work and believes being loyal to the people who have helped her achieve success is important.

Stacey Chapman's heart belongs to the Northern Territory bush where she manages tens of thousands of head of cattle on more than one million hectares with her husband. "I like the vastness, the people — just the space, to be honest," she says. But three years ago the veterinary nurse's heart failed and she was forced to leave it all behind and relocate to Brisbane, 2,500 kilometres away.
