With Election Day fast approaching, San Luis Obispo County acquired a new Dominion High Pro ballot scanner to expedite the counting of local election results, according to Erin Clausen, San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder Public Information Specialist. Clausen said the scanner triples the speed of existing machines. The ballot-counting process is overseen by the County Clerk-Recorder and its office’s elections officials.

When the Cal State system unveiled a new policy prohibiting encampments on Aug. 15, it was met with frustration and disappointment by pro-Palestine student organizers at Cal Poly. The Cal State’s new policy bans encampments, overnight demonstrations and unauthorized camping items. It also restricts wearing masks that conceal identity during protests and requires written permission for chalking and displaying banners on campus.

After the Pride Center team commemorated the start of Pride Month by painting the “P” rainbow colors this week, it was vandalized with black paint. The vandalism was reported to Mustang News this morning. An anonymous San Luis Obispo visitor saw the vandalism at 9:30 a.m. this morning when the black paint was still wet. With the black paint splatters, “Palestine” was spray painted over the rainbow paint, according to the anonymous visitor.

A pro-Palestinian protest at Cal Poly on May 23 resulted in a clash with police, eight arrests and the four-hour closure of a major campus entrance. Two officers lifted a “Free Palestine” painted wooden barricade off the street as 13 law enforcement officers–several in riot gear–crowded around a crosswalk across California Boulevard. The final protester was handcuffed by a Cal Poly Police Department (CPPD) officer.
