They also voted at Tuesday's referendum against a proposed bond of $3.5 million, in large part to take care of a projected $2.3 million deficit in in the 2024-25 fiscal year, its inaugural year. The former Region 6 school district, which included Morris, Warren and Goshen, and Litchfield schools merged last year, a move that was intended to save the four towns money.

The Gilbert Corp. has hired Michael Susi as the quasi-public junior-senior high school's next head of school, effective July 1. He will replace Greg Shugrue, who is retiring after three years at the school. Susi will be paid a $210,000 annual salary. Susi is the associate head of school for finance and operations at Woodstock Academy, which, like Gilbert, is one of the three endowed academies in the state.

THOMASTON - First Selectman Edmond V. Mone is serving his final term in office. Mone, 75, announced this week he is not running for reelection in November and is retiring public service. He was first elected 16 years ago, in 2009. Article continues below this adPrior to that, Mone, a Republican, served on the Board of Finance and the Inland/Wetlands and Watercourses Commission, as an alternate member.

WINSTED - The fight for a contract between the board that oversees the two public elementary schools and the quasi-public Gilbert School is back on. Gilbert and the Winsted Board of Education have operated without a contract for six years; the state approved the last contract for 2017-18 and 2018-19. Kurt Werner, the newest member of the school board, motioned during a school board meeting last week to have the board and the Gilbert Corp.

LITCHFIELD - Taxpayers in Litchfield, Goshen, Morris and Warren will head to the polls May 6 to decide whether the Region 20 school district can borrow $3.5 million to cover a $2.3 million deficit in its operating budget. School officials say while taking out a loan is not ideal, spreading out the payments over 20 years is preferable over paying it back it all back in one year. As it stands now, the assessment for each of the member towns is going up 12.7%.
