LITCHFIELD - A new regional school district's financial problems could get worse, before they get better. The finance director of Region 20, which is a merger of the former Region 6 towns of Morris, Goshen and Warren and the Litchfield school systems, informed the Board of Education last week the district's deficit, currently projected at $2.3 million, could end up as high as $2.7 million.

WINSTED - The town is proposing a nearly 2 mill increase in taxes for the 2025-26 fiscal year. Taxes would go up from 27.24 mills to 29.17 mills, a 7.1% increase. A home assessed at $250,000 would pay $483 more, from $6,810 to $7,293. One mill equals $1 of tax for every $1,000 of assessed property value. Town spending would rise 0.5%, or $210,769, from $40,806,370 to $41,017,139.

They also voted at Tuesday's referendum against a proposed bond of $3.5 million, in large part to take care of a projected $2.3 million deficit in in the 2024-25 fiscal year, its inaugural year. The former Region 6 school district, which included Morris, Warren and Goshen, and Litchfield schools merged last year, a move that was intended to save the four towns money.

The Gilbert Corp. has hired Michael Susi as the quasi-public junior-senior high school's next head of school, effective July 1. He will replace Greg Shugrue, who is retiring after three years at the school. Susi will be paid a $210,000 annual salary. Susi is the associate head of school for finance and operations at Woodstock Academy, which, like Gilbert, is one of the three endowed academies in the state.

THOMASTON - First Selectman Edmond V. Mone is serving his final term in office. Mone, 75, announced this week he is not running for reelection in November and is retiring public service. He was first elected 16 years ago, in 2009. Article continues below this adPrior to that, Mone, a Republican, served on the Board of Finance and the Inland/Wetlands and Watercourses Commission, as an alternate member.
