A US tax payer funded genocide in Palestine rages on, not to mention the other mass atrocities occurring in Sudan and the Congo, several friends and acquaintances have had to leave the city, and a job recruiter just told me over the phone “the job market is so bad”.

For a brief moment, A Sign of the Times gestures toward a more interesting version of itself: one that conveys, amid its charmingly hopeful theme of seeking justice and meaning in the big city, that such quests don't always succeed, and there is still value in being committed to one’s beliefs and virtues anyway. But a typical happily ever after soon washes that flourish of subversion away, in spite of the musical's primary dramatic fuel being that the only certain thing is change itself.

And then go for the volcanic eruption of Dominique Morisseau’s words, which toggle effortlessly between the naturalistic and the poetic but sharp. And then see it for Moses Ingram’s performance as Nina, named for musician/activist Simone as the child of Black revolutionaries.
