I woke up to my windows crying again this morning. It happens almost every day at this time of year. I live in a 1940s-built, timber bungalow. It has insulation in the ceiling, and some in the walls, but we're not sure what's happening under the house – and frankly, we're too scared to check. The windows are all original, good solid rimu frames in good condition, but they are single glazed.

It was a year of working smarter, not harder, of repurposing, upcycling and renovating, rather than spending; a year of cleverness trumping avarice. As the popularity of TikTok surged, however, we saw more and more facks – fake hacks, that don’t work, manufactured or faked purely for clout – touted as time-saving. It was hard to know what was worthwhile trying, and what was just a little bit silly. So without further ado, here are our five favourite hacks of 2023.

Last year, we published hundreds of stories about our gardens and gardening. We covered every aspect of the pastime, from large to small plots, easy care and high maintenance, general upkeep and radical overhauls. We were invited by a host of green-thumbed Kiwis to take a sneak peek into private paradises and personal labours of love. Far from being a mere diversion, however, we learnt a lot from these trips into the green and pleasant lands behind the nation’s front gates.
