ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — A necessary surgery. An unexpected bill. A Zephyrhills woman told she owes more than $150,000. Madeline Rogers contacted the ABC Action News I-Team after seeing the series "Patient No More," which highlighted medical insurance denials. “I was told every time, denied. Denied. Denied," Rogers told the I-Team when she tried to appeal a health insurance denial for a surgery.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 92-year-old woman in a nursing home is being told she owes the City of St. Petersburg more than $10,000 for a water bill on a vacant home that has no detected leaks. Her daughter, Noreen McClure, spoke directly to city council members at Thursday's meeting on her behalf. Scripps News Group's Kylie McGivern first met with McClure last fall at her mother's home. The sky-high bill came in prior to Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton.

TAMPA, Fla. — More than two out of five working-age adults report being charged for a health service that they thought was free or covered by insurance and fewer than half challenged those bills by contacting their provider or insurer. It's important for patients to know they can fight back and have a good shot at winning. The Commonwealth Fund, a nonpartisan nonprofit based in New York City, conducted the survey that led to this recent study on health insurance denials.
