The concept that the overlap between biological and cultural diversity is not random first emerged during the International Congress of Ethnobiology in Belém, Brazil (1988). Since then there has been increasing recognition of the close links between the loss of both cultural and biological diversity (Maffi, 2005; Gavin et al., 2015).
