In a marathon battle that lasted four hours and 48 minutes and finished just after 2.50am, the American became the third teen to beat a top 10 player after the efforts of Joao Fonseca and Jakub Mensik. Tien finished the job in a thrilling tiebreaker, winning 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (8-10), 1-6, 7-6 (10-7).

The dream of the Special Ks is over after the doubles duo of Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios were forced to medically retire in their round one battle. Up against fellow Aussies James Duckworth and Aleksandar Vukic, the fan-favourites both came into the match under injury clouds. Kokkinakis had battled hard during a five-set singles thriller against Jack Draper the night before, and received treatment for his shoulder throughout the match.
