The liminal space in-between: balancing with cautious optimism Liminal comes from the Latin word limen, meaning threshold of being in the in-between (Hockey & James, 2002), the time between the ‘what was’ and the ‘next’. There is a letting go of the old self; waiting for the reconstructed self to arrive. In this liminal space, many participants and families experienced the uncertainty about how this reconstructed self would manifest.
