Nestled among the mountains and lakes of Southeast Alaska, Sitka is a small town steeped in natural beauty and history. Approximately 90 mi from the state capital of Juneau, it is spread over Baranof Island, part of Chichagof Island and others. Russian explorers settled Sitka — derived from a contraction of “People on the Outside of Baranof Island” in the language of the Tlingit Indians who have lived in the area since the turn of the last Ice Age.

This is the third time your author has been able to experience the generosity of NAESA International and be warmly welcomed to attend the annual Wisconsin Elevator Symposium. Everyone from NAESA staff to those in attendance and the staff at the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa are friendly each year, often putting what your author knows as “Southern hospitality” to shame. I look forward to the trek to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, each year now, and this year did not disappoint.

While the markets waited for Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to drop interest rates in September, the construction industry was not waiting around. Construction starts jumped 4% in the first eight months of 2024, while groundbreakings climbed 6% the last month of the summer. Experts at Dodge Construction think the momentum should continue, especially as we move to the first quarter of 2025. Even when times are good, however, there is always something to worry about.

In an unexpected, yet nostalgic, crossover, ELEVATOR WORLD recently received a letter containing a baseball card. Addressed to Dr. Lee Gray, curator for EW’s online elevator museum, the note from Texas attorney Seth Ellerin explained that the enclosed Upper Deck (UD) card, “Historical Moments: Elevator Invented,” was a donation. Ellerin wrote that he has given his sports collection to museums throughout the world.
