High Water

There was not much going on here until the flood came along. Accordingly, Keyser area got six inches of rain. The ’85 flood we got 11 inches, just five inches more. It is a good thing it came down the North Branch of the Potomac instead of the South Branch, or Green Spring would have really gotten hit. All our water is backwater. The water came up our lane to Tanner Farm Drive and we couldn’t get out for three days. It was diverting up in the fields below my house.
The passing of my favorite teacher

I hope the cold rains and cool breezes are over for April and warm sunshine and April showers bring May flowers. I was so sorry to hear of the passing of my very favorite school teacher, Barbara Ann Ansel Carl. Barbara passed away Thursday, April 17, at Belmont, Pleasants County. Barbara taught in a three grade (4, 5, and 6) school and we all turned out well, even some professionals. I would like to extend my sympathy to her family and friends and to her sister and friend Vickie Milleson’s family.
The wonderful joys of spring

Besides the cool winds earlier, the sunny days in the 70s and 80s have been delightful. We can sit outside and see the green grass coming back, the beautiful spring flowers and trees looming, the bees buzzing and birds chirping. These are all the wonderful joys of spring. This past Friday, Randy and Wanda Koontz treated Songa Maphis and son, Adam, to breakfast at Traditions in Martinsburg, Pa. It was in honor of Songa celebrating her birthday, which was Saturday.
Catching up with old friends

I am sorry I missed a couple issues, but I’m dealing with some health issues so I hope I haven’t missed out on too much. On March 7 Wanda Koontz and several members of the Class of 1968 from Oldtown High School met for lunch at Oldtown School House Kitchen. Others besides Wanda were Billie Rae Householder, Nelva Chambers, Betty Robertson, Linda Twigg, Susie Simpson and Janet Grimm. While enjoying a delicious lunch they discussed plans to attend spring and summer musicals.
Back to winter

The January thaw almost missed us, but it came sliding in the last week of the month. We enjoyed the few warm days and snow leaving, then back to winter. Then it’s February, the groundhog and more winter, and the Super Bowl, the talk of the town. Hope your team won. Rylee Koontz spent last Saturday night with Makynna Preiss of Capon Bridge helping Makynna celebrate her 16th birthday. The sweetest day of the year came up on Friday.
Hoping for the January thaw

January of 2025 is proving to be one from the past. Bitter cold temperatures that stay around with snow on the ground that won’t leave, just waiting for a fresh coat, which it is getting today. Some days back when I was in business cutting hair, I had clients that wouldn’t get a hair cut until the January thaw. They said it was too cold to come out and part with their hair. We only have two weeks for the thaw to come this year.

Happy New Year and welcome to 2025. I wish you all good things in the months ahead. Time marches on and doesn’t stop, except with a camera, when you take a picture. An old Indian friend pointed that out to me. Some late December news: On Friday, Dec. 20, Randy and Wanda Koontz celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary and had dinner at the Main Street Grill. The annual family Christmas dinner was held at the home of Matt and Michele Embrey and sons Alex and Eli with all the traditional foods.

By the time you read this, the big day you have been preparing for has come and gone, Christmas. I hope you got all your wishes. As you were preparing for material things, we you preparing your heart? That’s why we have the Advent season, to prepare our heart for the birth of Jesus. The Christmas story is the greatest story ever told. God loved us so much He sent his only son as a baby born in a manger over 2,000 years ago.
Cold spell a shock to the system

Catching up with some late Thanksgiving news, Matt and Michele Embrey, who held their annual Thanksgiving Day dinner. Those present were Eli and Alex and friend Dianne Moore, Gig and Gale Smith, Randy, Wanda, Amanda Rylee and Lana Koontz. We had a taste of those cold winter temperatures last week, after an unusually warm November. Those low teen temperatures were a shock to our system. We had to dig out all that winter gear. At least next time we will be ready. I like summertime myself.

Two weeks ago on a Saturday, Matt and Michele Embrey and Amanda Koontz visited their cousin, Veronica Hedrich, in Martinsburg for dinner. Sunday before last Amanda Koontz and daughter Rylee went to Shear to Ryleigh Hall’s 15th birthday dinner celebration. Birthday wishes Amanda Koontz who celebrates on Dec. 2. Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Robert “Skeets” Everett of Springfield. Skeets passed away Nov. 15. He was one of Springfield’s icons and will be missed by all who knew him.
