Becker, 39, a leader of the pro-49ers bloc on the City Council, was found guilty Dec. 5 of election-year improprieties involving the team. He was convicted on two charges: a misdemeanor for leaking a confidential grand jury report to the 49ers during his unsuccessful 2022 campaign for mayor, and a felony for lying under oath about the leak.

The Santa Clara City Council approved an agreement on the finances of hosting World Cup matches next year at Levi's Stadium, despite vocal opposition raising concerns about millions of dollars in potential losses the city could incur. Approval of the "FIFA World Cup 2026 Assignment and Assumption Agreement," by a 5-2 vote early Wednesday, came after years of secrecy and uncertainty about how Santa Clara would cover the costs involved with hosting soccer's marquee event.

Anthony Becker, the Santa Clara City Council member whose unsuccessful 2022 run for mayor included $2.5 million in campaign contributions from the San Francisco 49ers, was convicted of perjury Thursday in Santa Clara County Superior Court. The jury of 10 women and two men reached the verdict at South County Courthouse in Morgan Hill, after a trial lasting about a month and deliberations of less than three hours.
