As the 366 days (leap year) that were 2024 draw to a close, we’re taking a quick look back at the notable faces that we featured throughout the year. Collectively, they not only convey the diverse and dynamic personalities that populate the Bay Area (including a MythBuster, the Snack Sensei and a zombie Hall of Famer) but also reflect on the Bay Area year that was: the 49ers Super Bowl run, Cybertruck sightings, the depressing departure of the Oakland A’s, and much more.

Looking back on our photos from these past 12 months, we can’t tell whether 2023 went quickly or January was three lifetimes ago. That said, the year certainly seemed like a very visual lap around the sun, particularly here in the Bay Area, from our turbulent winter to our fall festival season. This year, we had the pleasure of photographing some seldom-visited locations, such as Red Rock Island, the Chapel of the Chimes and the BART maintenance yard.

Say what you want about San Francisco’s “doom loop” narrative in 2023, but we found a lot of optimism via the faces that we photographed this year. Looking back over our images from these past 12 months, we keep coming back to the portraits in particular, and the many vibrant personalities that they featured. Whether we captured locals partying or protesting (or just cooking cheesesteaks) we found them to be a very photogenic reminder of what a dynamic place the Bay Area can be.
