Gas prices are rising after months of slow decrease, making the goal of three dollars per gallon unlikely in the near future. The average price for a gallon of gas on Monday, January 6 is $3.06, according to AAA. That’s three cents higher than a week ago, and two cents cheaper than one year ago. Drivers in New York State are paying an average of $3.12 per gallon, the same price as last Monday.

Gas prices are the gift that keeps on giving as they near an average national price of three dollars per gallon for the first time in nearly four years. The price of gas has slowly been falling, with prices within a dime of the three-dollar mark for over a month. The average price for a gallon of gas on Monday, December 9 is $3.02, according to AAA. That’s three cents lower than a week ago, and 15 cents cheaper than one year ago.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Another Democratic candidate has entered the race to be Syracuse’s next mayor. Common Councilor at-large Chol Majok announced his candidacy at a campaign event on Sunday, December 8. Majok was born in South Sudan and came to America in 2001 as a refugee, according to his campaign website. He has served as a councilor since 2020, and is the first refugee elected to public office in Syracuse’s history. The Mayoral race is already crowded well ahead of election day.

Highways across the state of New York will be getting new funding to pay for repairs to stand up to harsh climate conditions. Governor Kathy Hochul announced $100 million in funding to prepare major roadways and highways across New York for inclement weather in the spring and summer. The announcement comes as crews from the Department of Transportation in many parts of upstate New York are currently dealing with snow and ice on the roads.

Former New York Congressman Anthony Brindisi will now serve as a federal judge. Brindisi was appointed by the Senate on Wednesday, December 4. The vote went along party lines. He has served in many state roles before this appointment, including as a judge on the New York State Court of Claims in Utica, New York since 2022 and as an Acting Supreme Court Justice in Oneida County, New York since the beginning of 2024. Brindisi, who previously practiced law at Brindisi, Murad & Brindisi Pearlman, LLP.
