A Minecraft Movie brings the blocky world of the immensely popular video game to the big screen in a PG-rated adventure starring Jack Black. As the title promises, it is “a” Minecraft movie. Undoubtedly, not the best version of a Minecraft movie that they could have gone with, but it is, by definition, a movie. And it has also racked up the biggest box office weekend of the year so far, earning over $300 million globally. As a parent of school-age kids, the success doesn’t surprise me.

Paddington in Peru, the third film in the popular series starring the marmalade-loving bear, has received an overwhelmingly positive reaction from critics and audiences, with healthy box office returns to boot. It’s cracking fun; however, the story feels more like an Indiana Jones movie that happens to star a small bear, rather than a story that could only happen to Paddington. British author Michael Bond created the character in the 1950s, inspired by the WWII refugees seeking safety in England.

There’s a new crimefighter at the multiplex, but he’s not part of the MCU or DCU’s endless roster of superheroes. He’s just a man, with the head of a dog, and he’s here to help…until a squirrel passes by. The new Dog Man animated film delivers silly fun from start to finish. It should delight young fans of the graphic novel series by Dav Pilkey on which it is based.
