The Middlesex High School (MHS) boys varsity track teams had a triple event winner and two double winners last Wednesday, May 7, at the five-team meet at Essex High School in Tappahannock, while the Lady Chargers had two double winners. Davonte Griffin paced the Chargers at Essex as the MHS sophomore won three events winning the 110 high hurdles (16.93); 300 intermediate hurdles (45.33) and high jump (6’ 2”).

The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity baseball team (8-7, 5-2) lost a 3-0 Tidewater District game to the King William (KW) Cavaliers on Thursday, May 8. Henry Fleet pitched a strong game against the Cavaliers holding KW to just three runs, but the Chargers could not get their bats going in the game. MHS’s defense also committed two errors that did not help Fleet’s cause. Fleet gave up six hits and walked three batters.

Nielson McMinn continues to stretch the Middlesex High School (MHS) school record in the discus throw. For two weeks in a row, he broke the MHS school record. Last week he threw the discus 156 feet, 5.5 inches on Thursday at King William High School.

The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger varsity baseball team (8-6, 5-1) had two Tidewater District wins last week, defeating Mathews, 2-0, on Tuesday, April 29, and West Point, 12-1, on Thursday, May 1. In the 2-0 shutout of the Blue Devils, Henry Fleet paced MHS from the mound allowing no runs, two hits, and two runners to reach on base on balls in his seven inning game pitching. Jakub Bowen paced the Chargers on offense with a hit in the third inning that scored two runs.

Nielson McMinn continues to make his mark on Middlesex High School (MHS) track history as the MHS senior discus whiz broke his own school record at a home track meet Thursday with a 152-foot throw. McMinn earlier this season broke a 30-year-old school record with a 150-foot, eight-inch throw, breaking a record set in 1995 by Ajani Ruffin and elevating him as one of the top discus throwers statewide in Virginia Class 1. Coach Joel Anderson said this week that McMinn has thrown 160 feet in practice.
MC supervisors OK $36.3 million budget

Relay team breaks MHS record

The Middlesex High School (MHS) 4 by 800 meter relay team broke a 2015 Charger school record mark of 8:40.44 by cruising to an 8:27.92 time at the second annual Denbigh Patriot Track Classic Invitational on Saturday in Newport News. The 4 by 800 meter relay team was the only first place finish for the Chargers in the meet. The record breaking 4 by 800 meter team was composed of Cameron Lambert, Thomas Dobb, Darius Jones and Gunnar Marston.

When Ronnie Bevins, of Bevins Oyster Co., Kinsale, Va., needed one of his boats rebuilt, he turned to Larry Jennings of Jennings Boatyard in Reedville, Va. The oysterman’s 32’ x 10.5’ fiberglass deadrise, originally built in 2006 by Ronnie Carmon of Crisfield, Md., was due for a major overhaul. Bevins Oyster Co. is one of Virginia’s largest oyster growers, leasing oyster grounds on all the state’s major rivers. The firm’s many commercial fishing boats are worked often and hard.
Middlesex County school reps sound alarm on non-competitive pay for teachers

Middlesex County Public Schools pays its teachers the lowest salaries of any school system on “this side of Interstate 95” was the message to Supervisors from school officials and the public at a hearing on the county’s proposed 2025-2026 budget. Earlier in the budget process, the school board requested from supervisors funding to give a 7% raise to teachers and 4% raise to other school employees in an attempt to get salaries competitive with surrounding counties.
Regional E-911 dispatch center eyed

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) is learning about the possibility of consolidating local E-911 centers into regional emergency dispatch communication operation centers. The county recently paid approximately $3.6 million to revamp the old Lewis B. Puller Center building at Cooks Corner into the Middlesex County Sheriff’s office and offices for officials of the Middlesex County Emergency Services Department.
