The Middlesex High School (MHS) boys varsity track teams had a triple event winner and two double winners last Wednesday, May 7, at the five-team meet at Essex High School in Tappahannock, while the Lady Chargers had two double winners. Davonte Griffin paced the Chargers at Essex as the MHS sophomore won three events winning the 110 high hurdles (16.93); 300 intermediate hurdles (45.33) and high jump (6’ 2”).

The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity baseball team (8-7, 5-2) lost a 3-0 Tidewater District game to the King William (KW) Cavaliers on Thursday, May 8. Henry Fleet pitched a strong game against the Cavaliers holding KW to just three runs, but the Chargers could not get their bats going in the game. MHS’s defense also committed two errors that did not help Fleet’s cause. Fleet gave up six hits and walked three batters.

Nielson McMinn continues to stretch the Middlesex High School (MHS) school record in the discus throw. For two weeks in a row, he broke the MHS school record. Last week he threw the discus 156 feet, 5.5 inches on Thursday at King William High School.

The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger varsity baseball team (8-6, 5-1) had two Tidewater District wins last week, defeating Mathews, 2-0, on Tuesday, April 29, and West Point, 12-1, on Thursday, May 1. In the 2-0 shutout of the Blue Devils, Henry Fleet paced MHS from the mound allowing no runs, two hits, and two runners to reach on base on balls in his seven inning game pitching. Jakub Bowen paced the Chargers on offense with a hit in the third inning that scored two runs.

Nielson McMinn continues to make his mark on Middlesex High School (MHS) track history as the MHS senior discus whiz broke his own school record at a home track meet Thursday with a 152-foot throw. McMinn earlier this season broke a 30-year-old school record with a 150-foot, eight-inch throw, breaking a record set in 1995 by Ajani Ruffin and elevating him as one of the top discus throwers statewide in Virginia Class 1. Coach Joel Anderson said this week that McMinn has thrown 160 feet in practice.
