Two Cougs, playing catchJohn Scukanec (’96 Crim. Jus.) makes a point to play a game of catch every day (Winter 2023). He saw the Fall 2024 story about Ed Niehl (’51 Phys. Ed., ’54 Ed.), a former WSU football player who recently turned 100. Scukanec, also a former Cougar football player, wanted to play catch with Niehl and said so on social media. So magazine associate editor Adriana Janovich helped connect them. And the rest is history.

When the world locked down five years ago because of the novel coronavirus, so much in our lives was transformed: work, health protocols, education. The list goes on. As vaccines and more information about the disease became available, most of us were ready to put the pandemic in the rearview mirror. Why consider it now? So many aspects of society and daily life remain affected by the pandemic.

The Association for Faculty Women is no ordinary networking group. It is arguably one of the most consequential organizations in Washington State University history—with the records to prove it. Among them: evidence of how AFW members have helped increase the numbers of women faculty at WSU, established a commission on women, and supported a gender equity lawsuit that transformed women’s athletics in the entire state, with impacts across the country.
