One dead, one injured in off-campus student apartment complex

By Mark WoolseyA Sunday night shooting at a Kennesaw-area apartment complex left one person dead and another injured. Cobb County Police say officers were called to the Bixby Apartments, 3061 George Busbee Parkway, and found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds in a parking lot area. A male victim with a gunshot wound was found in a nearby apartment. The apartments are off-campus student housing, also known as purpose-built student housing, within zoning codes.
Dangerously high heat index in Georgia today and Wednesday

The National Weather Service is warning of dangerously high heat index values and the possibility of severe storms across north and central Georgia through the middle of the week. The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook and a heat advisory for Cobb County and other parts of north and central Georgia in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Marietta police link two separate gang-related shootings to same suspect

Marietta police say they’ve established a link between two April shooting cases and say both are gang-related. Authorities say the first occurred April 19 on Natchez Trace near Powder Springs Street and that four people were shot while walking down the street. One teenager who was hit twice was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. One adult and three juveniles were arrested in that case and were booked into jail and juvenile detention.

Vinings Cove Homeowners removes 15 bags of litter from Buckner Road

Avid community volunteer Barry Krebs submitted the follow report and photos:The Vinings Cove Homeowners with a little help from representatives from the Mableton Improvement Coalition, Friends Of Mableton and Lions Club removed 15 bags of litter from their adopted Buckner Road. They also removed 10 bags of litter Pebblebrook Road. It was a productive way to start the weekend while getting a little exercise and taking in the nice weather.
Scout Troop 22 cleans up litter on Cooper Lake Road

Avid community volunteer Barry Krebs submitted the following articles with photos about a litter cleanup by Boy Scout Troop 22 on Cooper Lake Road:Boy Scout Troop # 22 and with a little help from the Lions Club conducted their quarterly litter cleanup of their adopted 2 miles of Cooper Lake Road. All together, we were able to remove about a dozen bags of litter. Tasty prizes were given out for the largest, weirdest, grossest and coolest pieces of litter found along the cleanup.
Ribbon-cutting for Fairground Streetscape Project next Friday

AAA: Georgia gas prices jump 9 cents over past week

According to AAA’s weekly report, gasoline prices in Georgia rose nine cents over the past week, reaching an average cost of $2.95 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. EV charging rates average 36 cents per kilowatt-hour nationally, with Georgia rates coming in at 37.7 cents. “Monday’s state average is 9 cents higher than it was a week ago, 2 cents higher than it was a month ago, and 31 cents lower than it was a year ago.
The incorporation of Smyrna: 1872

This is an evergreen article that we republish periodically, often with updates as we do further research. It was the second in our series Cobb County History through Documents, and is the text of the Smyrna incorporation act of the Georgia legislature in 1872. One particularly interesting thing, since Smyrna moved to relax its ordinances around the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages shortly before we originally published this, is the brief section prohibiting the sale of alcohol.
